FAQ – The Capabilities of RFID

Just how much information does an RFID tag hold?

Capabilities of RFID

A typical RFID tag can store up to two kilobytes of data. That equates to about one written page of text in the typical word processing program. Luckily, in the world of real time data collection, this depth of storage is plenty to allow for the data on a product to be collected and returned to the company.

At the technical level, the process of collecting data  for an RFID tag is quite simple. It communicates at the electromagnetic level, using radio waves to read data on other tags, receive data from the RFID reader antenna, return data to the reader, and allow for the reader to format the electromagnetic frequencies as important data.

Active and Semi-Passive Tags

Though their circuits are powered by internal batteries, these tags have the power to be read from great distances, up to 300 feet away. An active tag will actually broadcast its radio waves to the reader, while a semi-passive tag needs the reader to power the broadcast signal. These tags are the most expensive yet, but the convenience they provide makes them a long-term investment that will pay back any company.

Why RFID can help your company

RFID asset tracking provides 99% data accuracy through automated data management processes, 80% accelerated reaction time (due to efficiency boosts through asset tracking), 40% reduction on lost equipment and underutilized assets, and most importantly, a holistic efficiency boost as a company, both financially and chronologically. RFID provides valuable data to the company, allowing for analysis of trends and optimization of business processes. There is no other investment that yields greater return on speed and financial efficiency of a company.
